A Comparison of LEED for Healthcare and the Green Guide for Health Care Rating Systems

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Course consists of a comparison of the 2 major healthcare-related sustainable rating systems in the United States, LEED for Healthcare released in early 2011 and the Green Guide for Health Care its predecessor and pilot. Attendees should leave with a good understanding of the 2 programs and which should be considered best fitting their healthcare project or organization best.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Review the recently issued LEED™ for Healthcare Rating System scorecard, a supplemental rating system for LEED™ for New Construction
  2. Review the Green Guide for Healthcare Rating System scorecard’s 2 components (New Construction/Renovation and Operations & Maintenance)
  3. Compare and contrast LEED™ for Healthcare Rating System and Green Guide for Healthcare Rating System
  4. Recognize which sustainability rating system to use for your project or organization depending on the many variables that affect the decision-making process

Facility Engineer Riverview Hospital

The basic function of the Facility Engineer is to provide all engineering support for design, construction, operations and maintenance for the Hospital and offsite properties.
 
Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Manage operations of the preventative maintenance program for the Engineering Department.
  • Works according to diagrams, sketches, operations manual, and manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Uses precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • May have major responsibilities for electrical equipment.
  • Responsible for training of assigned maintenance mechanics.
  • Reviews, schedules, and assigns work requests for repairs and maintenance.
  • Requires responsible experience in general maintenance involving electricity, plumbing, heating and mechanical principles.
  • Studies blueprints and diagrams to ascertain layouts, location, and specification of items to be installed, repaired, or serviced.
  • Provide operations and maintenance knowledge on all building systems such as generators / transfer switches, electrical distribution, steam, heating hot water, chilled water, domestic hot and cold water, sanitary drain, storm drain, medical gases, fire protection, temperature control, card access, cctv and television.
  • Manage construction and maintenance projects.
  • Maintain all procedures to meet all regulatory compliance like JCAHO, HFAP, OSHA and SBOH.
  • Work with Operations Director to complete research, budgets, designs, cost estimates and project management on new construction, renovations and maintenance projects.

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent and a minimum of 2 to 4 years experience in design, construction and maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems.

St. Vincent Health - Energy Specialist Engineer (Full-time)

JOB SUMMARY:

The successful incumbent will propose and monitor system wide initiatives that result in energy/utility savings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED:

  1. Analyze current Power Plant Operation establish a baseline for Energy usage. Define benchmarks and opportunities that will optimize energy utilization. Assist local ministries with facility infrastructure improvement program.

  1. Propose a unified (system wide) approach to Energy Savings that will support environmental stewardship initiatives.

  1. Research, implement, monitor and maintain a utility tracking system. Organize, monitor, track and maintain communications to future energy cost savings initiatives. Review all new project requests for potential Energy Savings opportunities.

  1. Support the development of a system wide approach to energy management. Assist in the development guidelines for and negotiate terms and conditions of utility company contracts and/or agreements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental)
  • Minimum 4 years experience with facilities operations and equipment
    • boilers, chillers, cooling towers, emergency generation, building automation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred
  • 1 year experience with Facilities Management Software preferred
  • space management, sustainability dashboards, utility management systems
  • Healthcare facility experience preferred
