Update from the ASHE Purdue Student Chapter

Learning

The ASHE Purdue Student Chapter has been hard at work during the Fall 2011 semester. We have toured two different hospitals during the course of this semester. These hospitals include Riley’s Children Hospital in Indianapolis and IU Health Arnett in Lafayette. We also attended the Midwest Healthcare Engineering Conference in Indianapolis, which helped to remind us to always be on our toes in the healthcare industry. We should always be prepared for the worst, while also remaining vigilant and supportive of the healthcare facility's larger vision and mission of being in the business of selling hope!

Service

In addition to the site visits, we participated in a philanthropy event at Monon Health Clinic in a rural town approximately thirty minutes north of Purdue’s campus. Faculty member, Doug Keith, arranged our student chapter to install cabinets and a 12’ wide wall system for the clinic’s needs. Monon Health Clinic is operating with a tight budget and recently discovered that they were subject to HIPAA violations because people in the waiting room were able to hear conversations in the exam rooms. There was no wall to separate the two areas. So in order to avoid a HIPAA violation, they played music until they were able to gather enough money to cover the material costs for the wall.

Research

This past summer, five members of our chapter were involved in a joint internship with ASHE, doing a commissioning research case study project (2E Surgical Services Expansion) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The five members participated in two-week rotations between all of the business partners in order to gain a full perspective of the commissioning process from the contractors, architects, engineers, commission agent and owner’s point of view. We are currently in the middle of our research and we utilize a project information-sharing platform called MySmartPlans that allows us to stay engaged in the entire process. Our chapter will attend the 2012 ASHE PDC in March to present our findings in collaboration with our business partners regarding the implementation and efficacy of the newly released ASHE Health Facility Commissioning Guidelines. We look forward to seeing you there!
