Dear Colleagues,

As you are probably aware the CHFM (Certified Healthcare Facility Manager) paper and pencil exam will be offered at the Midwest Healthcare Engineering conference in Indianapolis on the last afternoon of the conference (November 2).  If you meet the eligibility requirements, I encourage you to take the exam and become a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager. This is a career step each member should consider. HOWEVER, you must register for the exam prior to September 21 - a date that is rapidly approaching.

I took this exam last year using the paper and pencil method at the ASHE conference and found three good things about this method.

  1. I find it easier to take a paper pencil exam than doing it on a computer (call me old fashioned).
  2. I actually had to commit to a date to take the exam since it was being offered at an event at a specific time.  Otherwise, I planned to take it "someday" at my convenience at a computer site.
  3. Committing to a date and registering forced me to do some study in preparation for the exam - which paid off.

There are two upcoming events that can help you prepare to take this exam. First is a conference call that is being offered by the Indiana Society for Healthcare Engineering (ISHE).  This conference call is next week on August 25 at 3:30 p.m.  Marlin Hook, from Indianapolis, and I will be moderating this conference call.  Also, there will be a study session at the Midwest Conference on Monday evening, October 31.

The text below provides information on the conference call and some web site addresses providing additional information on the CHFM exam process.  Again, I encourage you to give this some serious consideration.

Thanks, and feel free to contact me if you have questions.

A special administration of the Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) Examination is being offered by the AHA Certification Center at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, during the Midwest Healthcare Conference. Interested individuals must apply by September 21, 2005. Walk-ins are not allowed to test. Begin by downloading the CHFM Candidate Handbook and Application from www.aha.org/certification (Click on the CHFM logo) or by calling AMP to order a copy. The Handbook includes eligibility requirements, a complete content outline for the Examination, sample test items, an application and instructions for completing the application.

Looking for study materials? Consider ordering the CHFM Self-Assessment Examination. Developed by the AHA Certification Center, the 100-item practice test mirrors the Examination in content, difficulty and cognitive level. For information on how to order, visit www.aha.org/certification.

A brochure is available regarding the NFPA 70/99 Healthcare Electrical System Workshop scheduled for Tuesday & Wednesday, September 27 & 28 in Northbrook, IL (just outside Chicago).

The brochure describes program content, and the various ways to register. The 2-day workshop is an interactive one - aimed at not only providing education on how to use NFPA 70 and 99 more efficiently and on why there are additional electrical system requirements in patient care areas, but also providing an opportunity to ask questions you may have about these two frequently referenced documents.

Also, if you are an ASHE member and are applying for, or renewing your CFHM certification, you can request 14.5 contact hours for attending this workshop.

Please contact me if you have any questions. Thanks.
